🦂 Asian Forest Scorpion (Heterometrus spp.)

A bold, hardy invertebrate with impressive size and strength, the Asian Forest Scorpion is perfect for display and low-handling keepers.

Origin: Southeast Asia (India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka)
Size: 12–15 cm (5–6 inches)
Lifespan: 6–8 years in captivity
Temperament: Defensive and reclusive; not recommended for handling
Activity: Nocturnal and fossorial (burrowing)

🏠 Housing

  • Minimum enclosure size: 30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm (12" x 12" x 12") for a single adult

  • Provide a secure, escape-proof enclosure with limited ventilation

  • Ideally include at least 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) of diggable substrate

  • Add cork bark or half logs for hides

  • Provide a deep, dark hide and plenty of surface cover

🌡️ Temperature & Lighting

  • Ideal temperature range: 24–28°C (75–82°F)

  • Night drop: 20–22°C (68–72°F)

  • Use a thermostat-controlled heat mat underneath the enclosure

  • No lighting required—avoid bright light

  • Maintain a natural 12-hour day/night cycle if light is used for display

💧 Humidity

  • Maintain humidity between 70–80%

  • Mist one side of the enclosure lightly 2–3 times per week

  • Ensure good ventilation to avoid mould

  • Provide a small, shallow water dish with clean water

🥩 Feeding

  • Feed gut-loaded insects such as crickets, dubia roaches, or locusts

  • Juveniles: 2–3 times per week

  • Adults: Once a week

  • Remove uneaten prey after 24 hours

  • Do not overfeed—scorpions may refuse food when full

🧼 Cleaning

  • Spot clean uneaten prey and waste weekly

  • Deep clean every 1–2 months, replacing substrate as needed

  • Rinse décor items and hides with warm water and reptile-safe disinfectant
