🐟 Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) Care Sheet

Difficulty: Intermediate
Lifespan: 10–15 years
Adult Size: 6–12 inches
Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons (long tank preferred)
Temperament: Calm and solitary; best kept alone or with other axolotls of similar size

🏡 Housing

  • Enclosure Type: Glass aquarium with secure lid (they can jump!)

  • Substrate: Bare bottom or fine sand

  • Décor: Smooth hides, silk/plastic plants, no sharp edges

  • Filtration: Sponge or low-flow filter to avoid strong currents

🌡️ Temperature & Water Quality

  • Temperature Range: 16–18°C (60–64°F); never above 20°C (68°F)

  • Water Parameters:

    • Ammonia: 0 ppm

    • Nitrite: 0 ppm

    • Nitrate: <40 ppm

    • pH: 6.5–8.0

  • Water Changes: 25–50% weekly, dechlorinated water only

💧 Humidity

  • Not applicable – fully aquatic

  • Keep tank well-covered to maintain stable temperature and prevent escapes

🍽️ Feeding

  • Diet: Earthworms, axolotl pellets, bloodworms, or soft sinking foods

  • Feeding Frequency:

    • Juveniles: Daily

    • Adults: Every 2–3 days

  • Remove uneaten food promptly to maintain water quality

✋ Handling

  • Avoid handling whenever possible

  • Use a soft net or container when moving

  • Delicate skin and gills can be easily damaged

⚠️ Things to Watch For

  • Signs of stress: curled tail tip, floating, reduced appetite

  • Fungal infections (white fuzzy patches)

  • Impaction from swallowing gravel

  • Ensure proper cycling and consistent parameters before adding your axolotl
