California Kingsnake (Lampropeltis californiae) Care Sheet

Lifespan: 15–20 years
Adult Size: 3–5 feet
Enclosure Size: Minimum 36" x 18" x 18" (larger preferred for adults)
Temperament: Generally docile, but can be flighty when young

🏡 Housing

  • Enclosure Type: Secure, escape-proof vivarium or terrarium

  • Substrate: Aspen or Lignocel bedding

  • Hides: At least two (warm and cool side)

  • Décor: Branches, rocks, and enrichment items for climbing and hiding

🌡️ Heating & Lighting

  • Temperature Gradient:

    • Warm side: 29–32°C (85–90°F)

    • Cool side: 22–26°C (72–78°F)

  • Night Temp: No lower than 18°C (65°F)

  • Heating Method: Heat mat or ceramic heat emitter with thermostat

  • Lighting: UVB optional but beneficial

💧 Humidity

  • Humidity Range: 40–60%

  • Water: Fresh water available at all times in a shallow dish

🍽️ Feeding

  • Diet: Frozen/thawed rodents (mice for juveniles, rats as adults)

  • Feeding Frequency:

    • Juveniles: Every 5–7 days

    • Adults: Every 7–14 days

  • Handling After Feeding: Wait at least hours to avoid regurgitation

✋ Handling

  • Regular gentle handling helps tame them

  • Always support their body and avoid sudden movements

  • May musk when scared, especially as juveniles

  • Refusal to eat (can happen during winter/brumation season)
