Origin: Arid and semi-arid regions of Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan
Size: 20–25 cm (8–10 inches)
Lifespan: 10–20 years in captivity
Temperament: Docile, easy to handle, and beginner-friendly
Activity: Nocturnal and terrestrial
🏠 Housing
Minimum enclosure size would be around 60 cm x 38 cm x 20 cm (24in x 15in x 8in) for one adult. Good enclosures to choose would be the HabiStat Terranium, or a small vivarium such as the Viv Exotic Repti-Home. If you want a full setup, our Starter Kits are great value.
Use solid substrate (e.g. tile, paper towel) for juveniles
Adults can use fine sand, such as HabiStat Desert Sand, if digestion and feeding practices are managed carefully
Provide at least three hides: warm, cool, and humid. HabiStat Sandstone Reptile Caves are great hides and for a humid hide, the HabiStat Moss Hide or the Exo Terra Wet Rock Ceramic Cave are good options.
Add logs, branches, and enrichment décor to encourage exploration
🌡️ Temperature & Lighting
Warm side: 31–34°C (88–93°F)
Cool side: 24–27°C (75–80°F)
Night temperature: Can drop to 18–22°C (64–72°F)
A thermometer is optional, but can provide peace of mind. Good options are the Habistat Digital Thermometer, the Exo Terra Infra Red Thermometer, or even a simple dial thermometer.
Use an under-tank heat mat, always with an on/off thermostat such as the Exo Terra 100w Electronic On/Off Thermostat or the HabiStat Classic Pro Mat Stat.
Low-level UVB (2–5%) such as the Arcadia ShadeDweller Max is optional but recommended for natural rhythm and wellbeing
Maintain a 12-hour light/dark cycle
💧 Humidity
Ideal humidity: 30–40%
Provide a moist hide such as the HabiStat Moss Hide or the Exo Terra Wet Rock Ceramic Cave with damp moss such as the Pro Rep Sphagnum Moss Brick or Blue Lizard Premium Sphagnum Moss to aid shedding
Avoid raising overall enclosure humidity too high. If you want to monitor the humidity, use a hygrometer such as the Zoo Med Digital Combo Gauge or the HabiStat Dial Hygrometer.
🥗 Feeding
Insectivorous diet of crickets, locusts, dubia roaches, mealworms, and other live insects
Feed juveniles daily
Feed adults every other day
For feeding mealworms, a mealworm dish is a great idea to stop escapees!
Dust insects with calcium such as HabiStat Pure Calcium at every feeding
Add a multivitamin supplement such as HabiStat Reptavite 1–2 times per week
🧼 Cleaning
Spot clean daily to remove faeces and leftover insects
Deep clean the enclosure every 1-2 weeks using reptile-safe disinfectant such as HabiStat Anti-Bac Spray or F10 Spray.
