🐍 Corn Snake (Pantherophis guttatus) Care Sheet

A colourful, hardy snake with a gentle nature, Corn Snakes are one of the most popular beginner reptiles thanks to their manageable size and easy care.

Origin: Southeastern United States
Size: 90–150 cm (3–5 feet)
Lifespan: 15–20 years in captivity
Temperament: Docile, inquisitive, and well-suited for beginners
Activity: Primarily crepuscular and terrestrial

🏠 Housing

  • Minimum enclosure size: 90 cm x 45 cm x 45 cm (3' x 1.5' x 1.5') for adults

  • Substrate options include aspen or Lignocel—avoid pine and cedar

  • Provide two secure hides (warm and cool side)

  • Include climbing branches, artificial foliage, and enrichment décor

  • Use a sturdy water bowl that cannot be tipped

🌡️ Temperature & Lighting

  • Warm side: 28–30°C (82–86°F)

  • Cool side: 21–24°C (70–75°F)

  • Night temperature: Can drop to 18–21°C (64–70°F)

  • Use a thermostat-controlled heat mat or ceramic heater

  • Lighting not essential, but a 12-hour day/night cycle is recommended

  • UVB lighting is optional but can promote natural behaviours

💧 Humidity

  • Maintain humidity between 40–60%

  • Provide a water bowl large enough for soaking

  • Monitor humidity especially during shedding periods

🥩 Feeding

  • Feed frozen-thawed rodents slightly wider than the snake’s body

  • Juveniles should eat every 5–7 days

  • Adults should eat every 7–10 days

  • Always thaw prey fully and serve warm

  • Avoid handling for 48 hours after feeding

🧼 Cleaning

  • Spot clean daily to remove waste

  • Deep clean monthly using a reptile-safe disinfectant

  • Ensure rough décor is available to help with shedding
