🕷️ Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus) Care Sheet

Curly hair tarantulas are a calm, hardy species ideal for beginners, known for their dense, curled leg hairs and docile nature.

Origin: Central America (primarily Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica)
Size: 12–15 cm (5–6") leg span
Lifespan:

  • Females: 10–15+ years

  • Males: 4–5 years
    Temperament: Docile, slow-moving, beginner-friendly
    Activity: Nocturnal and terrestrial burrower

🏠 Housing

  • Enclosure Size: 30 x 30 x 30 cm (12" x 12" x 12") for an adult

  • Substrate: 7–10 cm (3–4") of coco fibre, bark or similar allow burrowing

  • Décor: Cork bark hide, fake plants, leaf litter

  • Lid: Must be secure with ventilation—tarantulas are good escape artists

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal Temp: 24–28°C (75–82°F)

  • Night Temp: Can drop to 20°C (68°F)

  • Humidity: 65–75%

  • Water: Shallow water dish; mist only lightly if needed—avoid excess moisture

🍽 Feeding

  • Diet: Gut-loaded crickets, dubia roaches, locusts, or mealworms

  • Feeding Frequency:
    Juveniles: 2–3x weekly
    Adults: Once a week

  • Prey Size: No larger than the spider’s abdomen

  • Note: Remove uneaten prey after 24 hours

🧼 Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Spot Clean: After feeding or visible waste

  • Full Substrate Change: Every 4–6 months or as needed

  • Handling: Avoid unless necessary—use soft tools for enclosure maintenance

⚠️ Moulting Tips

  • Do not disturb a tarantula in moult—this is a vulnerable time

  • Stop feeding 1–2 weeks prior to an expected moult

  • Post-moult, wait 5–10 days before offering food again
