🦎 Crested Gecko (Correlophus ciliatus) Care Sheet
A hardy and handleable arboreal gecko, the Crested Gecko is a favourite for beginners thanks to its calm nature, easy care, and unique look.
Origin: New Caledonia
Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches)
Lifespan: Well into their teens (exact lifespan in captivity is unknown)
Temperament: Generally tame and suitable for beginners
Activity: Arboreal and capable climbers and jumpers
🏠 Housing
Enclosure Size: A glass tank or vivarium measuring 30 cm x 30 cm x 45 cm (12" x 12" x 18") minimum, but bigger is better.
Vertical Space: Provide branches or perches for climbing.
Hiding Spots: Include plants at various levels to allow security and proper thermoregulation.
Substrate: Use moisture-retentive substrates like eco earth or plantation soil to maintain humidity without moulding.
🌡️ Temperature
Daytime: Maintain temperatures around 22–24°C (75°F).
Nighttime: Temperatures can safely drop to 13°C (55°F).
Heating: Often, little to no additional heating is needed. If required, a small heat mat on the back or side of the terrarium can help. Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures above 28°C (82°F) to prevent stress.
💡 Lighting
UVB Lighting: Not necessary due to their nocturnal nature, but low-level UVB may encourage natural behaviours.
Night Lighting: Not required, but can be used if desired.
💧 Humidity
Optimal Range: Maintain relative humidity between 60–80%.
Misting: Regularly mist the enclosure with room temperature water to maintain humidity. Frequency depends on the enclosure setup.
Water Consumption: Crested geckos typically drink water droplets from misting and will usually ignore a bowl.
🥗 Feeding
Primary Diet: Crickets and or other prey insects along with commercial crested gecko diets are recommended for balanced nutrition.
Supplements: All feeder insects should be dusted with Calcium Powder daily and vitamins once a week.
Feeding Frequency: Juveniles should be fed daily, while adults can be fed three times a week.
