Difficulty: Intermediate
Lifespan: 20–30+ years
Adult Size: 6–8 feet (occasionally larger)
Enclosure Size: 4–6 ft long minimum for adults
Temperament: Calm and handleable, though strong and inquisitive

🏠 Enclosure

  • Minimum adult size: 120–180 cm (4–6 ft) enclosure

  • Type: Sturdy, escape-proof vivarium or PVC enclosure

  • Ventilation: Moderate, avoid overly dry or humid conditions

  • Juveniles can be housed in smaller setups but will outgrow them quickly

🌿 Substrate & Décor

  • Substrate: Coco fibre, cypress mulch, orchid bark, or soil mix

  • Depth: 2–4 inches for spot cleaning and humidity retention

  • Décor: Branches (they enjoy climbing), hides at both ends, cork bark, leaf litter

  • Provide a large water dish—many boas enjoy soaking

🌡️ Temperature & Heating

  • Warm side: 30–32°C (86–90°F)

  • Cool side: 24–26°C (75–79°F)

  • Night drop: 22–24°C (72–75°F)

  • Use a basking lamp, ceramic heat emitter, or heat panel with thermostat

💡 Lighting

  • UVB not required but optional low-level UVB (5–6%) may support wellbeing

  • Provide a natural 12-hour day/night cycle with ambient room lighting or LED

💧 Humidity

  • Ideal range: 55–70%

  • Mist lightly if needed, especially during shed

  • Ensure good airflow to prevent stagnant moisture

  • Include a moist hide or moss box if shedding issues occur

💧 Water

  • Use a large, sturdy water bowl

  • Clean and refill regularly—helps with humidity and soaking

🥩 Feeding

  • Diet: Frozen-thawed rodents up to appropriately sized rabbits for large adults

  • Feed prey not much larger than the widest part of the snake's body

  • Schedule:

    • Juveniles: Every 7–10 days

    • Adults: Every 14–21 days

    • Avoid overfeeding—boas can become overweight easily

⚠️ Handling & Behaviour

  • Generally calm and tolerant of handling

  • Always support the body fully with both hands

  • Never handle after feeding or during shed

  • Be mindful of their size and strength—these snakes are muscular

🧼 Cleaning

  • Spot clean weekly

  • Replace substrate every 6–8 weeks or as needed

  • Disinfect water bowl and surfaces regularly
