🐸 Green Horned Frog (Ceratophrys cranwelli) Care Sheet

Difficulty: Beginner to intermediate
Lifespan: 10–15 years
Adult Size: 4–6 inches (females larger)
Enclosure Size: Ideally 45cmx45cm for a single adult
Temperament: Sedentary, bold, and easy to care for.

🏡 Housing

  • Enclosure Type: Glass terrarium with secure lid

  • Substrate: Moist coconut fibre, sphagnum moss, or bioactive soil mix

  • Décor: Shallow water dish, leaf litter, cork bark or hides

  • Enrichment: Burrowing space and moderate plant cover

🌡️ Temperature & Lighting

  • Daytime Temp: 24–27°C (75–81°F)

  • Night Temp: 21–23°C (70–73°F)

  • Heating: Low-wattage heat mat(under tank) or ceramic heat emitter

  • Lighting: UVB optional but beneficial; use a 12-hour light/dark cycle

💧 Humidity

  • Humidity Range: 60–80%

  • Misting: Daily or as needed to keep substrate moist (not wet)

  • Water Dish: Shallow, wide dish with dechlorinated water

🍽️ Feeding

  • Diet: Insects (crickets, roaches, locusts), occasional earthworms, pinkie mice (for adults only, and infrequently)

  • Feeding Frequency:

    • Juveniles: Daily

    • Adults: Every 2–3 days

  • Supplementation: Calcium and multivitamins 1–2x per week

  • Feeding Method: Use tongs to avoid accidental bites

✋ Handling

  • Best kept as a display pet — they don’t enjoy handling

  • Skin is sensitive and absorbs chemicals — handle only when necessary with clean, wet hands or gloves

  • Can bite if threatened

  • Substrate ingestion (impaction risk) — feed from dish or tongs

  • Overfeeding — prone to obesity
